Abdulraheem Olawuyi (APC-Kwara), the member representing Kwara State’s Ekiti-Isin/ Irepodun/ Oke-ero federal constituency, has entered the contest for Speaker of the House of Representatives for the 10th National Assembly.

According to reports, the 10th National Assembly will be inaugurated in June.

Hon. Olawuyi said in a statement released to the media on Saturday that he would formally declare for the seat in Abuja on April 4.

Olawuyi, the chairman of the House Committee on Emergency and Disaster Preparedness, said he had sought input from a broad range of people before deciding to run for the position and was encouraged by the response.

In the 2023 National Assembly election, the lawmaker, who is a ranking member in the House, earned a third term.

He stated that if elected, he believes he has the necessary expertise to improve the Speaker’s office.

10th NASS: Jigawa Rep Abubakar Yalleman Enters Speakership Race
Meanwhile, Abubakar Yalleman, a member of the House of Representatives representing the Mallammadori/Kaugama Federal Constituency in Jigawa State, had entered the contest.

Last Wednesday in Abuja, the lawmaker declared his plan to run for Speaker of the 10th National Assembly.

Yalleman, the Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Defence, argued that, while zoning of political positions is not explicitly stated in the 1999 Constitution, it is consistent with the principle of federal character.

While declaring his intention, he told reporters, “I want to tell you that if the leadership of our party, the All Progressives Congress, zones it to the North-West geopolitical zone where I hail from, I will contest for the position of Speaker of the 10th National Assembly.”

He clarified that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which has maintained its majority in the Senate and House, will use the National Assembly leadership zoning formula to decide which positions the lawmakers will compete for.

Ahmed Idris Wase, Deputy Speaker of the House, Aliyu Muktar Betara, Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations, and other candidates have expressed interest in the job.
