Bolanle Raheem: Court rejects police officer’s plea in the murder case of the Lagos lawyer

A Lagos High Court dismissed a “no-case” submission made by Drambi Vandi, the alleged killer of Bolanle Raheem.

Bolanle was shot dead in the Ajah neighborhood of Lagos on December 25, 2022, while in a vehicle with her husband and daughter.

Vandi was charged with murder on a single count on January 16 after shooting the 41-year-old pregnant property lawyer in the breast.

On February 28, dismissed ASP Vandi submitted an application with the court, requesting that the charge against him be dropped.

Vandi’s lawyer, Gbenro Gbadamosi, stated that the prosecution witnesses’ testimony was inconsistent and did not connect his client to the murder.

Justice Ibironke Harrison ruled on Monday that the prosecution, headed by Lagos Attorney-General Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN), had presented adequate oral and documentary evidence.

At this point, the court is not considering the veracity of the prosecution witnesses, according to Justice Harrison.

“The issue now is whether the prosecution has established a prima facie case, not whether it has proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt,” the judge concluded.

On February 15, the state closed its case after calling 11 witnesses, including eight police officers, including Vandi’s coworkers, two eyewitnesses, and a pathologist.

According to the state’s Administration of Criminal Justice Laws, an interlocutory appeal would not halt the trial, according to Lagos Director of Public Prosecution, Babajide Martins.

The defendant’s defense will be heard in court on May 16, 2023.
