Donald Trump to face trial for rape, defamation

Former US President Donald Trump will go on trial on Tuesday for the alleged rape of Jean Caroll, a former Elle magazine advice columnist.

In a court complaint, the author says that the former American president raped her in a department store changing room in the mid-1990s.

Jury selection is slated to begin in federal court in Manhattan, where the former Elle magazine advice columnist is also accusing Trump of defamation.

Ms Carroll claims Trump raped her. However, in an October 2022 post on his Truth Social site, the former president called her claim a “hoax” and a “complete scam.” He claimed she made up the incident to promote her memoir and that she was “not my type!”

Mr. Trump is not compelled to appear in court. Due to traffic and safety concerns, his attorneys have stated that he may not attend. Ms Carroll’s lawyers, on the other hand, have announced that they do not intend to bring Mr Trump as a witness.

If Mr. Trump testifies, he will almost certainly face a robust cross-examination. Mr Trump has repeatedly and indecently criticized Ms Carroll since she made the first public accusation of rape against him in 2019. He once claimed she has a mental ailment.

To shield the jurors from harassment by Mr Trump fans, U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan, who ruled over the case, ordered that their names be withheld from the public, including the attorneys.

Mr. Trump, the Republican Party’s frontrunner for president in 2024, is currently the target of multiple lawsuits and investigations.

One of the allegations made against Mr Trump by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg is the hush payment of money to a pornstar.

Mr Trump pleaded not guilty to the accusations in a New York state court on April 4.

Letitia James, the New York Attorney General, has also charged the former president with civil fraud against his own corporation.
