The Edo Police Command has arrested seven people on suspicion of cultism and murder in the state.
In a press conference on Thursday in Benin, the state capital, Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, described the suspects as Okechukwu Samuel, Omoruyi Friday, Osayande Ogbomwan, Adodo Etiosa, Ogbeifun Destiny, Atohan Osazuwa, and Enohiese Nelson.
Nwabuzor stated that police from the Aduwawa Divisional Police Office conducted a raid on dark spots at Upper Mission Extension.
The perpetrators were apprehended in an RX 330 SUV with the registration number BEN 899 NC after the operation, which followed cult killings.
One laptop and a cutlass were discovered during the search. The accused admitted to being Black Axe members involved in the recent cult conflicts.
Police and vigilantes apprehended others in the Okhunmwun community, according to a police spokesperson.
“Upon a search, [from] a bag belonging to Ogbomwan, two locally made pistols, and six live cartridges were recovered,” Nwabuzor said.
According to the police, Ogbomwan admitted that he and other members of the group murdered one Gideon Ojeaga in the Iguosa neighborhood.
The suspects, on the other hand, told a different story.
Atohan Osazuwa, speaking with journalists, denied being a member of any fraternity, claiming they were arrested on their way home.
“They took us to the station. When they searched our bag, they found a laptop and a cutlass, which my friend is using to work on his building site. We are not cultists, and we didn’t kill anyone,” the suspect insisted.
