Onyeka Umeh, an eight-year-old kid, was rescued from a canal on Pastor Ojediran Street in Lagos State’s Ejigbo neighborhood.

On Monday afternoon, Umeh was believed to be scooping up pet bottles and other items along the canal before tracking them to a sinking place.

In a statement, the Director of Lagos Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, said he was retrieved alive after his friend raised the alert.

“The distress call, which was alerted at 3:20 pm, had Ejigbo Fire Station and the Agency’s Rescue Crew mobilized to salvage the sinking boy from the canal,” according to the statement.

“He was eventually handed over to the Police from Ejigbo Division to be reunited with his family.”

Adeseye asked parents to keep an eye on their children and wards and to provide much-needed counsel in order to keep them safe.
