The Enugu State Police Command of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has begun a major manhunt for suspected gunmen who allegedly attacked its operatives while on routine stop-and-search duty in Uwani, Enugu State, South-East Nigeria.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Deputy Superintendent of Police Daniel Ndukwe, said in statement in Enugu on Monday that the gunmen allegedly abandoned the black Mercedes Benz ML 350 they utilised for the operation near the Enugu-Port-Harcourt Road.
According to the statement, the alleged attack occurred on Sunday at 11:30 AM at Osadebe Street, Kenyatta Market, Enugu.
“The armed hoodlums, who arrived in large numbers and drove SUVs (Sports Utility Vehicles), opened fire on Police officers on routine stop-and-search duty.
“In the ensuing gun duel with the operatives, many of the hoodlums escaped with varying degrees of fatal gunshot injuries,” according to the Police statement.
It further stated: “Two of the Police officers who suffered severe gunshot wounds were taken to the hospital, where they were pronounced dead, and their bodies were deposited in the mortuary for preservation.”
The Command explained that a manhunt was “immediately launched”, resulting in the suspected gunmen abandoning the black Mercedes Benz ML 350 4Matic SUV they allegedly used in the attack.
The vehicle, which was riddled with bullet holes and blood smears, was subsequently retrieved, according to the Command.
It added: “The recovery of the vehicle and its signs corroborates preliminary investigation, which suggests that at least two of the hoodlums were neutralised.”
The statement claimed that Enugu State Commissioner of Police Ahmed Ammani had directed Command to sustain the “ongoing manhunt operation” to nab the fleeing suspects.
“As a result, the CP urges state residents and the general public to provide useful information to the command in order for the suspects to be apprehended as soon as possible,” it was stated.
The Police chief was quoted as urging people and medical facility owners, in particular, to “report any person or persons, dead or alive, sighted with gunshot wounds to the Police”.
