Five dead, 24 injured in Cross River auto crash

The Federal Road Safety Corps in Cross River has verified that five people were killed and 24 were injured in an auto accident in the state’s Ogoja Local Government Area.

Mr Abdullahi Hassan, Sector Commander, verified the event in a phone conversation with News Agency of Nigeria on Saturday in Calabar.

According to Hassan, the crash happened around 12.41 p.m. on Saturday in Abakpa community, Ogoja local government area.

According to him, the incident included a Mercedes Benz truck transporting 31 passengers to a burial service.

The driver lost control of the vehicle due to a burst tyre, according to the sector commander.

“Among the victims were 29 male adults, one female adult and one female child.

“Out of the 31 passengers, 24 male adults got injured, two passengers were not injured, that is one female adult and one female child, while five male adults lost their lives in the crash.

“Three of the corpses were taken to the mortuary while those injured were taken to the General Hospital Ogoja by FRSC officials.

“The other two corpses were retrieved by their relatives at the scene of the accident,” he said.
