Seven people killed, several others injured in Delta rainstorm

The Delta administration grieved the tragedy that occurred following a Wednesday night rainfall that claimed seven lives and injured several more on Thursday.

The victims included a 10-year-old kid, according to the information commissioner, Charles Aniagwu, who revealed this at a news conference in Asaba.

The tragedy occurred in the Oko axis of Oshimili and Okpanam, Oshimili South North council areas, according to Mr Aniagwu.

“The storm that greeted the downpour on Wednesday, in the Oko axis, we lost six persons as the rainstorm fell a building and some trees, and the collapsed structure led to the death of six persons,” the commissioner explained. “One other person has been critically injured and is being treated at Asaba Specialist Hospital, while five others are in stable condition but have sustained some level of injury.”

“There is also another one that is so pitiful,” he added. The state government is interfering with flood control measures in Okotomi Community in Okpanam to save the community from floods and to open up the region. However, due to the rainfall flood on Wednesday, a 10-year-old boy coming from church in the evening slipped and fell into the drain that was being built.”

The flood took the youngster away due to the enormous volume of water at the building site, according to the commissioner.

“This is extremely upsetting, and we pray that God will give their families the strength to bear their loss.” “Even as we pray to God to comfort us as a state,” Mr Aniagwu remarked.

He stated that a government team led by the secretary to the state government, Patrick Ukah, was on the scene to ensure the body’s recovery.

Mr Aniagwu further stated that the government was notified that a petrol tanker had skipped and hanged on Udu Bridge, and that despite the crisis, security officers had been dispatched to fence off the area.

To avoid an accident, he recommended everyone to remain away from the vehicle.
