About 10 months after the disengagement of Sheikh Muhammad Nuru Khalid as Chief Imam of the mosque in April 2022 under controversial circumstances, the Management Committee of the National Assembly Central Mosque, Legislators’ Quarters, Apo, Abuja, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has appointed Sheikh Sufyan Malumfashi, as the new Chief Imam of the mosque.
The Secretary of the Mosque’s Management Committee, Malam Mansur Jarkasa, said in a statement on Sunday in Abuja that the appointment took effect from February 1, 2023.
Jarkasa said that the new appointment was endorsed by the Mosque’s Management Committee headed by Senator Saidu Dansadau and his Deputy, Abubakar Bawa-Bwari.
The committee, according to the Secretary, “after all necessary due diligence, consultation with stakeholders and due process resolved to unanimously appoint Sheikh Sufyan Malumfashi as the new Chief Imam of the mosque.”
Jarkasa explained that Malumfashi had served as the Chief Imam of Area 11 Jumu’at Mosque, and was at the Saudi Arabian Consulate Office, Asokoro, as Jumma’at Prayer Imam.
The ecretary said that Malumfashi is currently a visiting Jumu’at Imam of Al-Noor Mosque, Wuse II, all in Abuja.
“Shiekh Malumfashi is presently the Deputy Ameer (Chairman) of the FCT Committee of Imams.
“He coordinates Da’awah activities on behalf of an International Donor Agency in six African countries
“He hails from Malumfashi Local Government Area of Katsina State and obtained his first degree in Islamic Studies from the Islamic University of Medina in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
“Similarly, the new Chief Imam of the National Assembly Central Mosque, Zone, E, Legislators’ Quarters, Apo, got his second degree from the Nasarawa State University, Keffi and is happily married with children.”
The News Room recalls that Malumfashi’s immediate predecessor as the Chief Imam of the Apo Legislative Quarters Mosque in Abuja, Khalid, had been in the position until Saturday, April 2, 2022.
He was reportedly suspended by the Mosque’s Management Committee on Saturday over his Jumma’at Prayer sermon on Friday, April 1, 2023, where he allegedly admonished the administration of President Muhammadu for failing to rein in escalating insecurity and killings in Nigeria.
On Monday, April 4, 2023, the Chairman of the Mosque’s Management Committee had announced Khalid’s sack, saying the Islamic cleric did not show remorse over his action.
Reacting to his sack, which generated reactions across Nigeria, Khalid said that the decision of the Mosque’s Committee was a necessary price he had to pay for identifying with the suffering masses and speaking truth to power.
He had disclosed his new appointment by the Management Committee of a new Jum’mat Mosque behind the Central Bank Nigeria, CBN Quarters, Abuja, and was then set to lead his new congregation with effect from Friday, April 8, 2023.
In his words then: “My sack is a reflection of how Nigeria is today. Many people are hiding under the cover of religion to perpetrate all manner of unwholesome acts.
“Such people would stop at nothing to take away people like me.
“This is the price we pay for aligning with the people and identifying with their sufferings.
“By the Grace of Almighty Allah, I will be leading my new congregation this Friday, because as clerics we need a platform to operate.
“There’s a Jum’mat Mosque we built behind the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN Quarters, in Abuja; I will now be leading the congregation there.”
