The All Progressives Congress (APC) is concerned about the growing number of lawmaker-elects running for posts in the 10th National Assembly.
Members of the ruling party elected to the National Assembly ahead of their June inauguration are vying for Senate President and House Speaker.
The APC’s National Working Committee (NWC) is concerned about the competition for positions, which could jeopardize the plan to zone the offices.
Not less than eight senators-elect have declared their intention to run for Senate President.
They are Senators Ahmad Lawan, the Senate President (Northeast), Godswill Akpabio (Southsouth), Barau Jibrin (Northwest), and Ali Ndume (Northwest). (Northeast).
Senator Sani Musa (Northcentral), Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (Southeast), Ebonyi State Governor Dave Umahi (Southeast), and Senator Osita Izunaso are among the others. (Southeast).
House Speaker aspirants include Deputy Speaker Idris Wase (Northcentral), Yusuf Gagdi (Northcentral), Abdulraheem Olawuyi (Kwara, Northcentral), and Aliyu Mukhtar Betara, Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation. (Borno, Northeast).
Other members of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs include Benjamin Kalu (Abia, Southeast), Tajudeen Abbas (Kaduna, Northwest), Sada Soli (Katsina, Northwest), Abubakar Makki Yalleman (Jigawa, Northwest), and Usman Sani Jaji (Katsina, Northwest). (Zamfara, Northwest).
In their campaign for the positions, the parliamentarians have received support from governors, monarchs, prominent party leaders, and others.
According to sources who talked with The Nation, several APC lawmakers-elect have begun conversations with their opposition counterparts.
Ndume, who has stated his intention to run for Senate President, has tasked the party leadership with allowing senators to choose their leaders rather than zoning.
Senators-elect, according to the legislator, should be able to choose their own leaders.
“The APC leadership did not take any position during the presidential primary,” Ndume remarked. The drill drew participants from all geopolitical zones.
“Senators should be allowed to select from among themselves a competent person with adequate legislative and managerial experience to lead the Senate.”
“Zoning may not result in the selection of the best candidate for the job.” That is why the selection of Senate presiding officers must be left entirely to the senators.”
According to a source, other hopefuls are awaiting the party’s zoning plan.
Senator Sani Musa, according to the source, may run for Deputy Senate President if the Senate President is not zoned to the Northcentral.
A source in Ndume’s camp further stated that if the zoning formula does not favor the Northeast in producing the next Senate President, he will consider running for Senate Leader.
“You know he is currently one of the most senior APC senators-elect,” the insider stated. Ordinarily, if you follow parliamentary traditions in a developed country, he should be appointed as Senate President.
“Don’t forget that he was a Senate Leader in the 8th Senate and ran for Senate President against Lawan during the 9th National Assembly’s inauguration.”
According to party sources, the geopolitical zone most likely to produce the next Senate President is the Southsouth.
