The decision The All Progressives Congress has chosen the direct route for its governorship primaries in Kogi State.
The decision to go from indirect to direct primaries was announced in a letter dated April 6, 2023, signed by the acting National Chairman, Senator Abubakar Kyari, to advise the Independent National Electoral Commission of the development.
“We refer to our earlier letter dated January 25, 2023, with reference no: APC/NHDQ/INEC/19/023/191 in which we notified the commission of the mode of primary election for the conduct of the governorship primary election in Kogi State,” the letter said in part.
“However, our great party, the All Progressives Congress, has reviewed the modalities for the conduct of the governorship primary election in Kogi state and has decided to use the direct mode of primary election rather than the indirect mode as previously communicated.”
“The primary election will continue to be held on Friday, April 14, 2023.”
“Following the foregoing, there will be a Special Congress to ratify the candidate who received the most votes in the Kogi State Gubernatorial Primary Election on Saturday, April 15, 2023.”
The race to replace Bello gained traction in January, when his Chief of Staff, Abdulkareem Asuku, the Auditor General, Ahmed Ododo, and the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Salami Ozigi-Deedat paid N50 million to pick up their nomination and expression of interest forms at the APC national secretariat in Abuja.
Other candidates in the race include James Faleke, Chairman of the House Committee on Finance and Secretary of the APC Presidential Campaign Council; Murtala Ajaka, Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the APC; and Smart Adeyemi, Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District.
The recent action has political observers wondering if Bello is willing to sacrifice his deputy governor, Edward Onoja, who has never concealed his desire to become the future leader of Kogi West, for the sake of equity.
In a similar event, the state All Progressive Congress’ delegate list for the purpose of picking a governorship candidate for the party in the November governorship elections was declared null and void by an Abuja Federal High Court on Wednesday.
While delivering his judgment, Justice James Omotosho ruled that the ward and local government congresses held on February 7 were invalid because they were not held in accordance with the Electoral Act 2022 and the APC Constitution.
The suit was filed by a group of disgruntled APC members led by Realwan Okpanachi.
