The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has requested that its Resident Electoral Commissioner in Adamawa State, Barr Hudu Yunusa Ari, be arrested and prosecuted.

It also requested that the Secretary to the Government of the Federation raise the notice of the appointing authority to the REC’s ‘unwholesome’ behavior for further action.

It made the decision during a meeting of its National Commissioners on Tuesday at the commission’s national headquarters in Abuja.

The conference was called less than 24 hours after the electoral umpire asked its Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Adamawa State, Hudu Yunusa Ari, to stay away from all electoral umpire and state election operations.

Recall that the INEC REC sparked outrage on Sunday when he declared Aisha ‘Binani’ Dahiru of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of Saturday’s supplementary election over the incumbent, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) about 9 a.m.

INEC promptly summoned Ari to Abuja and pronounced his proclamation to be invalid and a usurpation of the collation and returning officer’s duties.

Prior to the suspension of the collation exercise on Saturday night, results from ten LGAs had been announced, with Binani trailing Fintiri.

The collation of results from the other ten LGAs was due to begin by 11 a.m. on Sunday, and Mele Lamido, the returning officer for the Adamawa governorship election, was not present when Ari declared Binani the victor.

According to the constitution, Lamido is the proper official with the authority to declare the election winner.
