The Labour Party (LP) has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recommend to President Muhammadu Buhari any erring Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for censure.
According to reports, the party’s Acting National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, announced this in response to the suspension of the Adamawa State REC, Hudu, Yunusa-Ari.
Remember that Yunusa-Ari unilaterally declared Senator Aishatu Dahiru, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in the Adamawa election, as the winner last Sunday, even though collation had not been completed.
INEC National Headquarters quickly invalidated Ari’s announcement and later named Ahmadu Fintiri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) the election winner.
The controversial REC was later suspended from the commission and requested additional action from President Muhamamdu Buhari.
Ifoh told Vanguard that as long as the president is in charge of choosing Resident Electoral Commissioners, the best the INEC can do is suggest sanctions for erring RECs.
“Because the President, based on a National Assembly Act, remains the appointing and confirming authority for RECs, the best INEC can do in terms of serious disciplinary action is to make recommendations,” he stated.
