In a Facebook post, the lawmaker representing Osun Central Senatorial District, Ajibola Basiru, denied celebrating the state governor, Ademola Adeleke’s, win at the Court of Appeal.
According to reports, the Court of Appeal in Abuja named Adeleke the winner of the Osun governorship election in a unanimous decision last week.
However, in a statement issued on Thursday, Basiru, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, distanced himself from the social media post honoring Adeleke.
Basiru accused the PDP and Adeleke’s government of being behind the post in a statement titled “APC Must Go to the Supreme Court.”
According to him, the Facebook post is an effort to validate the Court of Appeal’s decision.
“My attention was drawn to a Facebook account with my pictures under the name Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru, wherein a post stated thus: ‘Buga judgment has been finally laid to rest!!!” Alhamdulilah’.
“The said Facebook account is obviously part of the mischievous handiwork of Jackson Adeleke’s rudderless Peoples Democratic Party government in Osun State, seeking to validate the judgment of the Court of Appeal, which was the result of their appeal against the tribunal’s judgment nullifying their party’s purported election in the July 2022 general(sic) election.”
“It appears that the PDP is desperate to seek dubious validation of the said Court of Appeal judgment, owing to an apparent fear that the judgment will not stand the test of review by the Supreme Court.”
However, the Osun PDP’s Director of Media, Oladele Olabamiji, dismissed Basiru’s allegations, claiming that the party or Adeleke would never participate in such an act.
“Who is Ajibola Basiru?” he asked. Someone who, after being soundly defeated by our party, will shortly become just another ordinary member of the public!
“If we have any headaches, he is not one of them.” We can’t go so far as to open a phony Facebook account and start posting things. To accomplish what? He doesn’t even have the legislative clout to justify such a move, and we don’t do such things.”
