Young child succumbs to drowning in Aboh community … Community leaders send SOS to govt for relief
The heavy rains/floods in the last few days have taken their toll on the sleepy oil and gas community of Aboh as a young child was said to have drowned in the river.
All efforts to save the young lad proved abortive.
A few bridges have also collapsed thus making the roads impassable to vehicles and commuters.
Following the drowning of the young child, a safety advisory has been issued to all parents and guardians in the community.
It states as follows:
* Supervise children especially near water bodies
* Educate children on river safety and flooding dangers
* Secure home environments to prevent unauthorized access to flooded areas
* Monitor weather reports and flooding alerts
* Designate safe zones for children to play during flooding
The safety advisory also added River safety guidelines. They include avoiding river banks especially during flooding, no swimming in rivers even for experienced swimmers, watch for hidden dangers, underwater obstacles, strong currents and changing water levels.
In addition, the community leaders called for relief from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and it’s counterpart in the state.
