Barely two weeks after the unfortunate incident and his prompt visit to the scene, the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Wednesday kicked off the rebuilding of the Akere Auto Spare Parts Market in the Ajegunle of the state, South-West Nigeria, which was razed by fire on March 8, 2023.
Sanwo-Olu had tweeted that he also donated the sum of N100 million to the affected traders to ease their pains.
The Governor counselled the people of Lagos to shun division as the Governorship and State House of Assembly elections hold on Saturday.
“Lagos takes care of its own and today I returned to kick off the redevelopment of the Akere Motor Parts Market in Ajeromi Ifelodun LGA (Local Government Area), which was affected by an unfortunate fire incident recently. I also donated N100 million to the affected traders to ease their pains,” Sanwo-Olu’s Twitter post read.
He added: “As we move towards the election this Saturday, we must not allow bigotry be what will divide us. We must watch our utterances and ensure that we are not divisive. It is about the ordinary, everyday people. You own the mandate, and it is about you.”
The News Room recalls that some shops were razed at the Akere Auto Spare Parts Market, Olodi-Apapa in the Ajegunle area of Lagos State following a fire outbreak in early hours of Wednesday, March 8, 2023.
Reporting on the incident, the Lagos State Fire Service claimed its Ajegunle Fire Station had subdued the fire.
The Service was alerted of the fire outbreak at about 03:28 AM on Wednesday, according to the statement signed by the Director of the Service, Margaret Adeseye.
She had further explained that the Ajegunle Fire Station upon arrival discovered that rows of shops that traded in auto spare parts were on fire.
She had said that, consequently, the Sari-Iganmu and Ilupeju fire crews of the Service to join the team to subdue the raging fire and salvage a nearby filling station, which then had a fully loaded 33,000-litre PMS tanker, amongst other adjoining buildings.
Adeseye had disclosed that a male adult with gunshot wound was recovered around the scene of the incident.
The Service had added that the cause of the fire was suspicious and will require detailed investigation to ascertain.
Notably, sales of automobile spare parts being one niche, among several other sectors, dominated by Igbo traders, in the midst of the current heightened tense atmosphere around the 2023 General Elections, suspicions have been rife that the Akere blaze was allegedly arson by the camp of Igbo-haters.
