The All Progressives Congress candidate, Abiodun Fawekun, was declared the winner of the Ido/Osi Constituency 1 supplementary election held today by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Prof. Ayobami Salami, the state INEC Commissioner, stated that Fawekun received 4,764 votes to overcome other candidates and was thus returned elected.

Salami said in a statement issued by the INEC Ekiti state Head of Voter Education and Publicity, Temitope Akanmu, declaring the official election results, that the Social Democratic Party candidate, Muyiwa Fadahunsi, polled 4,204 votes to finish second, while Ayodele Awoniyi of the Peoples Democratic Party received 422 votes.

The REC congratulated the electoral stakeholders and the people of Ekiti State on “the peaceful conduct of this election.”

The supplementary poll had a good turnout of voters.

Voters turned out in large numbers to vote, while security forces such as the police, army, and civil defense were on hand to prevent a repeat of the violence that prompted the supplemental election.

Salami, the REC, had pleaded for calm among members of various political parties outside polling stations, advising them to “refrain from activities that could disrupt the process for the second time.”

Dr Lawrence Ogunsina, Chairman of Ido/Osi Local Government, stated that the election process was free, fair, and credible, adding that the Bimodal Voter Authentication System worked effectively and that INEC employees were efficient in their tasks at the three polling units.

Dare Ogundare, Commissioner of Police, Ekiti State Command, who warned that police would not tolerate any act of violence, urged eligible voters to “go out en masse to exercise their franchise without any form of apprehension.”
