Festus Keyamo, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, has criticized the Labour Party (LP) over the conflict between two leadership factions.

On Wednesday, there were wild scenes amongst Labour Party chieftains in Abuja as factions of the party attempted to seize the National Secretariat in Utako, Abuja.

According to reports, the party has split into two parts. The National Chairman, Julius Abure, leads one faction, while the acting National Chairman, Lamidi Apapa, leads the other.

Supporters of the two groups are vying for the party’s leadership, and their debate was taken to the party’s headquarters yesterday as the party works to screen candidates for the governorships elections for Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi.

According to reports, it required the involvement of security personnel, including private security guards tasked with securing the party’s headquarters building, to prevent a verbal altercation between party chieftains and their supporters from escalating into a free-for-all.

Abure’s followers and members of his National Working Committee (NWC) were said to have arrived at the Secretariat for a meeting and possible screening of governorship candidates in Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi.

They had barely gotten started when Apapa reportedly arrived with his supporters for the same exercise.

Following the intervention of security personnel, they were persuaded to back down.

On Thursday, Keyamo took to his verified Twitter account to attack the party for attempting to alter the country but failing to resolve its leadership dilemma.

“Behold the ‘new breeds’ that want to change Nigeria!” he wrote.
