Spanish football giant, Real Madrid, for the first in its history fielded no Spanish players in its starting lineup for a LaLiga match against Villarreal on Saturday, according to CNN.

Quoting sports data companies Opta Sport and Gracenote, CNN reported that Real Madrid Manager Carlo Ancelotti had drafted a starting lineup comprising a Belgian, an Austrian, a Croat, a Uruguayan, two Brazilians, two Germans and three Frenchmen for the crucial match against Villarreal.

However, the international talent presented did not prevent Real Madril, also known as Los Blancos, from succumbing to a 2-1 defeat against Villarreal at the Estadio de la Ceramica, reportedly spurning a chance to go top of LaLiga.

An important win for Villarreal, aka Yellow Submarines, it is the second league defeat of the season for Real Madrid.

The match outcome has drawn both teams level on points with fourth-place Atletico Madrid in the table.

Villarreal came close to scoring in the fifth minute through a blistering shot by Francis Coquelin from the centre of the box in a goalless first half.

The Yellow Submarines, however, took the lead through a goal by Yeremy Pino in the 47th minute.

Shortly afterwards, following the confirmation of a Villarreal handball by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), Karim Benzema slotted a penalty into the right-hand corner of the goal.

Villarreal retook the lead just three minutes after with its own penalty when Real Madrid recorded a handball in the box.

Villarreal held on for the win after Gerard Moreno successfully converted the penalty to goal.
