The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has arrested a woman, described as social media “serial entrepreneur”, who, allegedly, with the Twitter handle @Simisola of Lala, offered the redesigned Naira notes for sale on social media.
The ICPC spokesperson, Mrs. Azuka Ogugua, explained in a statement on Wednesday that the suspect was arrested as a result of intelligence received by the commission’s operatives.
The suspect, according to Ogugua, allegedly seized the opportunity of the scarcity of the new Naira notes to openly market the new notes.
“It is believed she is in collusion with key elements in the financial services sector diverting the newly released notes away from banking halls and payment channels into a ‘black market’,” Ogugua claimed.
She stated that the suspect, who was described as a social media “serial entrepreneur”, allegedly deals in skincare products and services, sales of fuel, facilitation of foreign travels through visa acquisitions, and other businesses.
The suspect, according to Ogugua, is currently in ICPC detention, assisting the anti-graft agency with its probing into the criminal trading of the Naira and the attendant scarcity and other negative economic outcomes this was causing the nation.
The ICPC spokesperson further explained that the woman’s arrest was in furtherance of the collaboration between the nation’s apex bank, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the commission and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in implementing the new cashless policy of the Federal Government, the introduction of the redesigned N200, N500 and N1,000 notes and their swap for the old versions.
