Gunmen reportedly killed 34 people in an attack on an IDP camp at LGEA Primary School Mgban in Nyiev Council Ward of Guma Local Government Area in Benue State on Friday night.

According to a resident merely identified as Jonah, armed men invaded the village at 9 p.m. on Friday.

According to him, a pregnant mother and her son were among those slain, while many more were injured.

Similarly, Christopher Waku, the Security Adviser for Guma Local Government Council, told Dailytrust that 34 people were killed and nearly 40 others were injured.

Waku, who told the publication he was at the scene of the tragedy, said the victims had been displaced from their numerous ancestral homes and were taking sanctuary in a classroom at LGEA Mgban.

“We recovered 24 bodies inside the classroom, while the other ten bodies were discovered along the road in the community.” They were slain while fleeing.

“It happened yesterday (Friday), shortly after 9 p.m. Some armed men, presumed to be herders, assaulted the settlement of Mgban, killing 34 people and injuring over 40 others who were taken to the hospital. “This murder is best described as genocide,” Waku remarked.

SP Catherine Anene, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Benue Police Command, confirmed the event to Dailytrust.

“Incident confirmed, please,” Anene said without details.
