The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) National Working Committee has accepted the appointment of Abba Kawu-Ali as the party’s acting National Chairman.
Kawu-Ali was the NNPP’s National Vice Chairman (North-East) until his current appointment, it was learned.
The National Leader and presidential candidate of the party in the 2023 elections, Rabiu Kwankwaso, was present at the meeting of the party’s NWC on Thursday, as was the vice-presidential candidate, Bishop Isaac Idahosa, the Chairman, Board of Trustees, Chief Boniface Aniebonam, the Secretary of the BoT, Buba Galadima, and other members of the NWC.
Professor Rufai Alkali resigned as the party’s national chairman last week, prompting the appointment of Kawu-Ali.
In a letter to the party’s National Secretary, Alkali stated that his decision to quit was motivated by the need for fresh blood to reposition the party in preparation for larger responsibilities.
“I am pleased to write and convey to you that I have stepped aside as the National Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party with effect from today, Friday, March 31, 2023,” reads the letter titled “Letter of stepping aside from the post of National Chairman, New Nigeria Peoples Party.”
“After closely monitoring the events leading up to, during, and following the recent general elections on February 25 and March 18, 2023, it is my humble opinion that our party, the NNPP, has a bright future and the potential to emerge as the leading political force capable of winning the presidential and all other elections in 2027.”
“To accomplish this, we must plan ahead and think ahead.” And the time has come. Our great party, the New Nigeria Peoples Party, will require major structural and systemic changes and reorganization at all levels of the party in order to strengthen its base, improve operational capabilities, and generally increase its competitive advantage over the other 17 political parties on the Independent National Electoral Commission nominal roll.
“Since we as a party all believe in and aspire to bring about a better Nigeria under the astute leadership of our leader, His Excellency, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, I believe no sacrifice is too great for any of us.”
“I am sure that this change must begin with me. This is precisely why, with a heavy heart, I have decided to step down as National Chairman of our party in order to allow for new blood to build on and improve on our modest efforts. I regret not doing more.
“By this letter, I also wish to inform our National Leader and Presidential Candidate, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, members of the National Working Committee, and all of our members nationwide that I am still and will remain a bona fide member of our party, and I pledge to serve and support our party at all levels to ensure our party’s continued progress and advancement.”
