Oladipo Diya Has Died, Aged 79

A former Chief of the General Staff (CGS) under military Head of State General Sani Abacha, retired Lieutenant-General Oladipo Diya, has passed away at the age of 79 years.

Diya, according to a statement from his family, passed away early on Sunday morning.

“Our dear Daddy passed onto glory in the early hours of 26th March 2023.

“Please keep us in your prayers as we mourn his demise in this period. Further announcements will be made public in due course,” according to a brief statement signed by the deceased’s son on Sunday.

The statement described “Lt. General Donaldson Oladipo Oyeyinka Diya (Rtd) GCON, LLB, BL, PSC, FSS, mni” as “our dear Husband, Father, Grandfather, and brother”.

Born April 3, 1944, Diya had served the Abacha junta as CGS or de facto Vice President of Nigeria from 1994 until his arrest for treason in 1997. 

As CGS, Diya had functioned as the Deputy Chairman of the Provisional Ruling Council (PRC), the highest governing body of the Abacha regime.

The Odogbolu, Ogu State native, who had previously served as Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), had years before that been Military Governor of Ogun State from January 1984 to August 1985.
