On Wednesday, a merchant named Dayo Bankole was killed and several others were injured after a robbery incident at a renowned phone market known as “computer village” in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
According to reports, an eight-man gang of armed robbers rushed the market in Ibara, Abeokuta’s commercial center, on motorcycles in broad daylight and began shooting intermittently.
According to reports, the incident generated panic in the vicinity, with many fleeing to safety to avoid being shot.
However, the traders eventually had the bravery to pursue their attackers and arrest one of them.
He disclosed that a distress call was made to the police at Ibara division and the DPO of Ibara division, Abayomi Adeniji, immediately mobilised his anti-robbery and surveillance teams in collaboration with men of the Amotekun corps to the scene.
“The armed robbery gang of about eight stormed the market popularly known as “TARMARC” at about 5:30 p.m., began shooting sporadically, and carting away expensive phones,” he claimed.
“A distress call was quickly made to the police at the Ibara divisional headquarters, and as a result, the DPO Ibara division, CSP Abayomi Adeniji, quickly mobilised his anti-robbery and surveillance teams in collaboration with men from the Amotekun corps and moved to the scene.”
“When the robbers saw the cops, they engaged them in a gun battle, but due to the cops’ superior firepower, the hoodlums fled.”
“They were hotly pursued, and one of the robbers, later identified as Adeniji Sakiru, 32, was apprehended with the help of market men.”
“Unfortunately, one Dayo Bankole, a market trader who was shot by the robbers, died while being treated at General Hospital Ijaye Abeokuta.”
“One double barrel locally made gun and assorted Criminal charms were recovered from the arrested robber.”
The PPRO, on the other hand, stated that the outgoing Commissioner of Police, now AIG, Frank Mba, has requested that the suspect be moved to State Criminal Investigation Departments for a confidential investigation.
Oyeyemi also stated that he has ordered a large manhunt for the remaining members of the gang in order to bring them to justice.
As a result, he urged members of the public, particularly hospitals, to notify authorities if they notice anyone with a gunshot wound in their neighborhood.
