The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a 21-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to address its longstanding demands, in accordance with labour laws.
This resolution was reached during a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at the University of Ibadan from August 17th to 18th, 2024.
As reported by SunNewspaper, sources disclosed that the NEC meeting also instructed ASUU branches nationwide to hold referendums to decide on the next steps, whether it be an indefinite strike, a staggered strike, or other forms of action in response to the government’s inaction.
ASUU’s demands include renegotiating the FG/ASUU 2009 agreement, payment of withheld salaries, adopting the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) for salary payments, clearing promotion arrears, halting the proliferation of universities, revitalizing public universities, addressing outstanding Earned Academic Allowances, and ending the victimization of union leaders.
Furthermore, the union has expressed concerns about the non-payment of salaries in some state universities.
ASUU had previously noted that the federal government promised to include their demands in the 2023 budget, but this was not fulfilled, leading to the current deadlock.
ASUU has a history of industrial action, often citing the government’s failure to honor agreements as the cause. The upcoming referendums at university branches will determine the union’s next move.
