The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, has encouraged Nigerians to pray for a peaceful transfer of power on May 29, when President Muhammadu Buhari relinquishes office to a new government.
Mr Buhari is set to hand over power to President-elect Bola Tinubu amid disagreements and litigation between the Peoples Democratic Party and the Labour Party.
Mr Abubakar made the demand in a statement issued by Khalid Aliyu, secretary general of the Jama’atu Nasir Islam (JNI).
Mr. Abubakar, the president-general of the JNI, also wished Mr. Buhari a happy retirement.
He urged the next administration with being equitable, just, and responsive, particularly on matters of security.
“We will all account to God for our stewardships, and this should always worry us more and spur us to be more circumspect,” he warned.
“May this joyous occasion be a time of happiness, peace, and blessings to all Muslims and our respective families, as well as our loved ones,” Mr Abubakar concluded. May God, the Most High, accept all of our Ramadan prayers, fasting, and good acts, and may He continue to shower us with His grace in the days and months ahead.”
Despite the country’s economic challenges, he reminded Muslims of the necessity of paying mandated alms at the end of Ramadan fasting.
“Alms should be given to the poor before the Eid prayer begins.” This, if done swiftly, will help people who do not have the wherewithal to care for their family throughout the festivities,” said Mr Abubakar. “Let us show kindness, unity, and compassion to those in need, because people are truly in need.”
The Muslim spiritual leader in Nigeria also warned that the qualities of Ramadan should not end with the conclusion of the holy month and urged the faithful to maintain the virtues of the holy month by intentional efforts and devotion. (NAN)
