The Ogun Police Command has arrested Yusuf Hassan, 43, for reportedly setting fire to his ex-lover Busayo Falola’s flat and burning down the entire structure.
SP The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Abimbola Oyeyemi, said this in a statement made in Abeokuta on Saturday.
At about 1:15 a.m., the incident occurred at 127, old Schorlar Palace, Igan road, Ago Iwoye, in Ogun’s Ijebu North Local Government Area.
He stated that the culprit was apprehended by police on April 4.
He stated that the arrest was made in response to a report filed at Ago Iwoye Divisional Headquarters by the house’s 62-year-old landlady, Adejoke Salau.
The PPRO stated that the landlord reported hearing a commotion from one of her buildings within her compound around 1:15 a.m., and she realized that the structure was on fire, with the tenants trapped inside.
Salau indicated that it was the swift involvement of neighbors that rescued the three tenants, but that the house was burned by the fire, according to Oyeyemi.
According to him, following the report, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Ago Iwoye, Noah Adekanye, led his men to the spot, where the residents of the house were invited to the station for questioning.
During questioning, one of the tenants, Falola, told police that she spotted her ex-lover, Yusuf Hassan, at the rear of her window at 12:30 a.m. on the fateful day.
” She went on to say that she was terrified to see him at that ungodly hour, which caused her to scream and flee to the room of another tenant.
” This prompted other tenants to come out to see what Hassan was up to, only to discover flames shooting from Falola’s room.
“As a result of the information, Yusuf Hassan was pursued and apprehended,” he stated.
Oyeyemi revealed that Hassan originally denied knowing anything about the incident, but then admitted to being the one who set fire to the residence.
” He went on to say that he planned to burn his ex-lover in her own apartment because he had tried in vain to reconcile with her.
“That’s why he bought N500 petrol, poured it into her room through the window, and set it on fire,” he explained.
According to Oyeyemi, the suspect has been sent to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and possible prosecution. (NAN)
