After hours of tension at the Wuse General Hospital, Abuja, officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service have formally released businesswoman, Tracyniter Nicholas Ohiri, to receive medical treatment.
Ohiri was reportedly arrested on the directive of the Minister of Works, David Umahi after she demanded payment of the money for the supply of gift items.
The development followed a dramatic standoff between armed correctional officers and a crowd of concerned Nigerians, activists and social media influencers who gathered at the hospital.
The officers had stormed the facility in an attempt to rearrest Ohiri, despite her having been granted bail by the court and fulfilling all stipulated conditions on Thursday at the Magistrate court located at Wuse Zone 2.
She was on Friday rushed to the hospital under emergency circumstances after allegedly slumping and losing consciousness in an attempt to rearrest her.
Upon her arrival at the emergency section of the hospital, medical personnel were battling to stabilise her when armed correctional officers, reportedly deployed from Suleja, Kuje and Keffi custodial centres, invaded the premises of the hospital in about 10 vehicles in a bid to effect the rearrest.
It was later alleged that the arrest warrants being presented by the officers shortly after she was granted bail by Magistrate Ibraheem Ope were fake.
It took the intervention of human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, Martins Otse aka VeryDarkMan, and Senator Ireti Kingibe, alongside other Nigerians who insisted that Ohiri be allowed to receive medical attention.
Tension escalated as supporters gathered within and around the hospital premises, chanting and demanding that correctional officials vacate the facility.
As pressure from protesters mounted and questions arose over the authenticity of the arrest warrants, the correctional officers eventually withdrew after requesting and receiving a medical report from the hospital management.
