David Adeleke, also known as Davido, a Nigerian artist, has said that his billionaire father, Chief Adedeji Adeleke, sent police to arrest him multiple times in the early days of his career.
The ‘Omo Baba Olowo’ singer revealed that his father was initially opposed to his musical career and wanted him to focus on his schooling.
On the heels of the release of his album, Davido recently appeared on Ebro in the Morning Program on Hot 97FM in New York, USA.
The musician said that his father dispatched police officers to arrest him and disrupt several performances at which he was scheduled to play.
He said, “He sent police to get me like he sees a billboard; for example, ‘Davido performing, Wizkid performing’. He will send police to arrest everybody.”
When asked why his dad sent police to arrest him, Davido said, “So, I can go back to school.
“He kept on doing it. Then there was one time. This is where I knew that ‘Oh I’m lit!’. They [police] came and got me. Then I’m in the cell and the dude that got the keys his phone rings, it’s my song. I said ‘that’s me’. He said ‘you’re Davido?’. I said ‘yes!’. And he let me go.”
When asked when his father decided not to arrest him, Davido replied, “I finished school.”
So I had to do something on the side. He didn’t dislike music; he just wanted me to finish school. And I get the impression that he wants me to be successful, very successful, in whatever I do.”
He went on to say that his father is now his biggest fan and that he is proud of him.
