A group of members of the supporters of Peter Obi’s presidency, the Obidient Movement which called itself the Obidient Movement Network (OMNET) in Edo State has announced its support for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Asue Ighodalo for the September 21 governorship election.

This endorsement was made after analyzing the political situation ahead of the election in the state according to the leader of the group who is also the chairman, Edo State Obidient Movement, Comrade Simpa Jerry Afadama. He said the group also has Engr. Emmanuel Irhebhude (Obidient Movement Network Secretary General) and other State executive members identified Ighodalo as the most suitable candidate to lead Edo State.

Afadama said OMNET was committed to the principles of good governance “competency, equity, capacity, and character” and that Ighodalo met all the criteria essential for a credible leader.

In contrast, OMNET expressed serious concerns about the Labour Party’s (LP) candidate, Olumide Akpata as it criticized him for his alleged lack of people management skills and alleged ties to the APC.

The group also raised alarms about the process through which Akpata emerged as the Labour Party candidate, alleging that the primary election was marred by financial inducements, with delegates allegedly receiving substantial sums in dollars. “OMNET views this as a troubling indicator of potential corruption and a lack of transparency in governance.

OMNET also dismissed the candidacy of the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s Monday Okpebolo, citing concerns about his educational background and communication skills. “The movement questions Okpebolo’s ability to effectively govern Edo State, particularly in light of the APC’s track record, which has contributed to the nation’s economic challenges. We fear that Okpebolo’s leadership would lead to increased political thuggery and a further decline in governance standards.”

Afadama said the Obidient Movement Network, which operates through a well-structured organization across the state, is composed of professionals from various fields, all dedicated to the progress of their communities. “With this endorsement, OMNET is calling on all supporters of good governance in Edo State to rally behind Asue Ighodalo in the upcoming election, confident that he is the candidate capable of leading the state to greater heights.”
