The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has authorized a revised cost of N49 billion for the old Enugu-Onitsha road project.
The Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, briefed State House media following the FEC meeting presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Wednesday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Fashola stated that his ministry sought and received two council approvals.
“We presented two memoranda to the council; both were approved; the first is about contract cost revision by way of augmentation for the old Enugu-Onitsha road in Enugu State, from Opi junction all the way to Udi-Oji to the Anambra border.”
“The augmentation was N17 billion, which brought the contract total to N49 billion with an additional completion time of 42 months.”
The second deal, according to him, was a new contract for the repair of the pavement on the third mainland bridge. He went on to say that maintenance would solve public concerns about the bridge’s potholes.
“This was approved for N6.3 billion over a 24-month period.” This is in accordance with the president’s Executive Order 11 on the continuing maintenance of public infrastructure.
“And this contract responds to the questions about potholes that have become visible on the entire pavement of the bridge deck spanning 11 eleven kilometers, as well as the interchanges—Adeniji Adele, Adekunle, and Gbagada ramps that all link the bridge; this is for the resurfacing of all of that.”
“Those who are familiar with the bridge will recall that all of these failures were not as visible on the bridge at the time we did some work; and the work that we did focused primarily on the bridge’s substructure—the piles, the underwater piles, the pile caps, and also the replacement of the expansion joints and the bearings.”
Fashola stated that the maintenance work is important to the bridge’s structural stability and will restore the driving surface and aesthetics.
“Some of the stolen rails; some of the planes that have become misaligned at the ramps that lead you on and off the bridge.”
“So, this is the work that is currently being done; so, all of the experience, avoiding potholes on the bridge; this project will address that,” he explained.
