The official protest letter submitted by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to FIFA has surfaced online, detailing a formal challenge against the Democratic Republic of Congo regarding the alleged use of ineligible players during the 2026 World Cup playoffs.
The three-page document, which was made public by UK-based journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, marks a significant escalation in a controversy that has gripped African football since the Super Eagles’ narrow defeat in November.
In the leaked correspondence, the NFF alleges that several high-profile players fielded by the DRC, including Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Axel Tuanzebe, were ineligible to represent the Leopard due to complex citizenship laws.
The core of Nigeria’s argument rests on the DRC’s own constitution, which strictly prohibits dual citizenship for adults.
The NFF contends that because these players reportedly still hold European passports, their Congolese nationality is legally void, rendering their international clearance fraudulent.
The NFF’s petition urges the world football governing body to conduct a forensic investigation into the documentation provided during the nationality switch process.
The Super Eagles are seeking a forfeit victory, which would see them replace the DRC in the upcoming Intercontinental Play-offs in Mexico.
While the document’s publication has reignited hope among Nigerian fans, the situation remains tense as FIFA has yet to release a final, definitive verdict on the matter.
Despite the circulating letter, recent logistical updates from FIFA have added to the confusion. Some official accreditation lists for the March play-offs have continued to feature the Democratic Republic of Congo, leading to speculation that the appeal may have been dismissed.
However, NFF officials have urged the public to ignore unofficial reports, maintaining that they are still awaiting formal communication from Zurich.
