A coalition of supporters of the convicted leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, is set to stage a protest today in Aba, Abia State, to demand his release.
The planned demonstration, organised under the banner of the Coalition of Lovers of Freedom, has been tagged a “One Million March” and is scheduled to take place in Aba on March 12, 2026 (Thursday).
In a flyer made available to the media on Wednesday, the organisers urged supporters from across the region to converge on Aba to peacefully demand Kanu’s freedom.
In a related statement issued on Wednesday, a former member of the Abia State House of Assembly, Obinna Ichita, appealed to participants to maintain peace during the protest.
“As Aba citizens prepare to gather tomorrow, I appeal to all participants to act with responsibility, discipline and civility.
“As a proud Aba indigene, my call is guided by ongoing efforts by responsible leaders to secure a peaceful and constructive resolution. While emotions run high around Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, our strength lies in wisdom, unity and respect for life, property and the rule of law.
“Let us express our concerns peacefully, respect the authority of security operatives and resist any attempt to politicise the gathering,” he said.
Kanu, who led the IPOB, was sentenced to life imprisonment on terrorism-related charges.
The trial judge, James Omotosho, ruled that prosecutors had established that Kanu, who also holds British citizenship, used the IPOB platform to incite attacks on security personnel and civilians in the South-East and during anti-police protests in Lagos.
Kanu was first arrested in October 2015 on treasonable felony charges.
Despite his conviction in 2025, several critics have continued to call for his release.
