In an accident in Enugu late Saturday, 15 individuals were killed and burned beyond recognition, including 13 occupants of a Toyota Hiace and two occupants of a Mercedes Truck.

The deadly crash happened at 8:20 p.m. on Saturday, April 8, 2023, 0.45km before the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital in Ituku, OZALLA, Enugu State.

Bisi Kazeem, Assistant Corps Marshal Corps Public Education Officer, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Headquarters, revealed in a statement on Sunday that the fatal crash was caused by excessive speed and route violation, also known in local parlance as ‘One Way’ driving.

According to the statement, the Mercedes Benz Truck driver drove against traffic, colliding with the Toyota Hiace commercial Bus, which was already traveling at a high speed.

As of the publication of this article, the Chairman of the Nkanu West Local Government Council had authorized the start of a mass burial for the burnt dead in the presence of the Nigeria Police Force, the FRSC, and other sympathisers.

While assuring the public of the Corps’ willingness to battle crashes on our roads, he stated that most of the crashes that have happened could have been avoided if all motorists followed the laws and demonstrated a high level of compliance with traffic regulations.

As a result, he urged all road users to refrain from violating traffic laws and to be cautious at all times.
