An All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain claimed on Sunday that the party’s problem is the result of a competition for ministerial positions in the Bola Tinubu administration.
According to the chieftain, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to the Sunday Telegraph, the competition over the slots resulted in the suspension of party members.
He went on to say that the party has been dealing with a crisis since the presidential and governorship elections, which has resulted in the suspension of members.
Suspensions have occurred in states such as Delta Abia, Enugu, and others.
In Delta, the NDDC Chairman, Lauretta Onochi, and the APC governorship candidate in the state, Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, were both suspended.
In suspending Omo-Agege, the party’s state chairman, Ulebor Isaac, on behalf of the APC’s State Executive Committee, Secretary, Inana Michael, and 23 others, unanimously resolved and adopted the expulsion of Omo-Agege as a member of the party by the executive committee of the Orogun Ward and Ughelli North Local Government Chapter in the expulsion letter.
“The State Executive Committee of the All Progressive Congress, Delta State, in a meeting held on the 31st March 2023 at the State Secretariat, Asaba, after due deliberation of the Notice of Resolution of Expulsion of Senator Ovie Omo-Agege as a member of the party by the executive committee of the Orogun ward and Ughelli North Local Government chapter dated 20th March 2023,” the letter reads.
“And, in accordance with Article 21.2 (1)(II)(VII) 21.3 and 21.5(g) of the Constitution 2022 (as amended), we unanimously resolved and adopted Senator Ovie Omo Agege’s expulsion as a member of the party.” Omo-Agege, the APC’s governorship candidate in Delta State, was defeated by Sheriff Oborevwori, a Peoples Democratic Party candidate. Lauretta Onochi was also suspended by various Delta APC groups.”
Seven chieftains, including former Abia State governor, Dr Chris Akomas, former Minister of State for Solid Minerals, Dr Uche Ogah, former Pro-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Senator Nkechi Nwaogu, the Executive Secretary of the National Land Development Agency (NALDA), Paul Ikonne, Hon. Sam Onuigbo, and others, were arrested in Abia State. Osita Okechukwu, Director General of VON, Geoffrey Onyeama, Ken Nnamani, former governor of Enugu State, Sullivan Chime, and others were also suspended for alleged anti-party activities.
In response to his suspension, Okechukwu stated, “The story of my kinsman Ugo Agbala is the story of a failed chairman quarrelling with himself.” He came from the PDP like a political criminal and kidnapped our wonderful party with the help of His Excellency, Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State.
“He drove away all stakeholders and boasted that he would quadruple the 56,000 votes we received in the 2019 presidential election.” Regrettably, he only received 4,722 points. Instead of apologizing, I mentioned his CV, which was floating around at the president-elect’s residence and the APC headquarters. This is why he is spreading lies about some of us APC founding members who sold the lone plot of land in Enugu during my governorship contest in 2011. Ironically, Agbala was in the PDP’s comfort zone when we were building the APC organization. In response to their suspensions, Chief Nkire and Anyanwu stated that the Abia State APC governorship candidate, Chief Ikechi Emenike, “must be held accountable for campaign funds.”
According to Anyanwu, Emenike did not install any billboards in the state for himself or the APC presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu.
“Party members are pitted against one another because of ministerial slots,” an APC chieftain from the party’s headquarters told the site. Although our party has not yet formed the government of 2023, members are actively competing for cabinet positions.
“All of the fights you see in the state party are over ministerial slots.” Our party members are not concerned with the state of the party or our President-elect, but rather with the position they may hold in the next administration.
“I will advise the President-elect to consider merit and competence in appointing ministerial nominees rather than those who were governorship candidates for the party in the previous elections.”
“Our party, whose victory is being challenged, should be able to appoint ministers and heads of parastatals with integrity and capacity.”
