Zamfara State governor, Dauda Lawal, has dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The state’s deputy governor, Mani Malam Mummuni, announced the defection of the state’s leadership to the ruling party on Monday, March 9, 2026.
In a viral video, Malam Mummuni announced on behalf of Governor Dauda Lawal that the state leadership had formally aligned with the ruling party.
The development comes amid growing pressure from political groups and influential figures in Zamfara who have been urging Lawal to align with the ruling party at the federal level.
The groups argue that such a move would strengthen cooperation with the federal government and improve access to resources needed to tackle the state’s security and development challenges.
Zamfara has for years battled persistent banditry, kidnapping, and rural violence, issues that have strained the state’s finances and security infrastructure. Some stakeholders believe that aligning politically with the party controlling the federal government could enhance collaboration in addressing these challenges.
Several political groups and community leaders in the state have in recent weeks openly appealed to the governor to consider joining the APC, arguing that political alignment with the centre could accelerate development projects and security interventions.
The pressure intensified following recent defections by political actors in the state, including lawmakers and party leaders who switched allegiance from the PDP to the APC.
Meanwhile, the development means President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has further consolidated his political grip across Nigeria following the defection of the Zamfara State government to the APC.
The move widens Tinubu’s influence at the subnational level, with the APC now governing more than 30 of Nigeria’s 36 states. The development reinforces the party’s dominance as the 2027 general elections draw near.
