The Indigenous People of Biafra has commended a United States-based commentator, Mark Arnold, and members of the U.S. Congress for what it described as their intervention in drawing attention to security concerns in Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Thursday by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the group said the remarks by the U.S. figures had helped highlight issues affecting communities in parts of the country.
IPOB, led by Nnamdi Kanu, maintained that its long-standing position on self-determination remains unchanged, calling for a peaceful and internationally supervised referendum to determine the political future of the South-East.
The group argued that such a referendum represents a lawful and non-violent approach to addressing grievances related to governance and security. It added that continued agitation reflects concerns over safety, inclusion, and political representation.
According to the statement, IPOB believes that greater international attention could encourage dialogue and adherence to democratic principles in resolving internal disputes.
The organisation also urged its supporters and the international community to continue engaging through lawful and diplomatic channels, while reiterating its call for self-determination.
IPOB further appealed to relevant authorities to prioritise peaceful solutions to Nigeria’s security and political challenges, noting that sustained dialogue remains key to stability and national cohesion.
