Arsenal are currently navigating a complex disciplinary landscape after six first-team players withdrew from international duty following their 2-0 Carabao Cup final loss to Manchester City.
According to reports from BBC Sports, the mass exodus, which includes stars like Martin Odegaard, William Saliba, and Gabriel Magalhaes, has sparked a debate over whether the club or the individuals involved could face formal sanctions from governing bodies.
Under established FIFA regulations, clubs are legally obligated to release players for international windows unless a genuine and verifiable injury exists.
While fans and rival clubs have raised eyebrows at the timing of these injuries, The Athletic reports that Arsenal are confident they can provide the necessary medical documentation to justify the players remaining in London for rehabilitation.
The rules state that if a club refuses to release a fit player, they risk severe penalties including heavy fines or even domestic points deductions.
However, the burden of proof typically rests on the club’s medical department. National associations, such as the French and Brazilian federations, have the right to fly in their own doctors to examine the players on-site if they suspect a club is “hoarding” talent.
Despite the optics of the situation, ESPN suggests that punishment is highly unlikely as long as the medical evidence is consistent. The most immediate consequence for the players is the “five-day rule,” a FIFA provision that would prevent any player who withdrew from injury from appearing in Arsenal’s next domestic match if it falls within five days of the international window’s end.
As it stands, the club appears to be in the clear, provided the injuries to Eberechi Eze, Leandro Trossard, and Jurrien Timber are validated by their respective national teams’ medical staff.
With more withdrawals potentially on the horizon, the Premier League and FIFA will be monitoring Arsenal’s upcoming team sheets closely to ensure the regulations are being followed in good faith.
