Manchester United defender Harry Maguire was handed a 15-month suspended sentence yesterday by a Greek court following a high-profile retrial.
The verdict, delivered by a three-judge panel on the island of Syros, found Maguire guilty of non-serious assault, resisting arrest, and attempted bribery stemming from a 2020 brawl in Mykonos.
While the sentence marks a reduction from the original 21-month term handed down four years ago, the footballer remains adamant about his innocence and has already vowed to take his case to the Greek Supreme Court.
According to The Guardian, the proceedings were underscored by sensational claims that Maguire repeatedly refused to pay a £50,000 ‘settlement’ to make the charges disappear.
Sources close to the player allege that representatives for the undercover officers involved had offered to drop the case in exchange for the payment on multiple occasions over the last six years.
Maguire reportedly rejected these offers outright, telling confidants he would rather be found guilty than pay a bribe for something he maintains he did not do.
The incident itself began during a family holiday when Maguire’s sister, Daisy, reportedly collapsed after being injected with a suspected date-rape drug by two men.
Maguire has consistently testified that he believed he was being kidnapped by plain-clothed individuals who failed to identify themselves as police.
Despite the court also imposing a €1,500 fine, Maguire’s legal team has labeled the judicial process a ‘shambles’.
Under Greek law, his latest appeal effectively quashes the conviction until the Supreme Court hearing, a process that must conclude before the statute of limitations expires in August 2028.
