Dr. Oluyinka Olutoye, a distinguished Nigerian surgeon, has carried out a groundbreaking medical procedure after operating on a baby while still in the womb.
At 23 weeks of pregnancy, he temporarily removed a baby girl from her mother’s womb to successfully take out a sacrococcygeal tumor — a rare growth located at the base of the spine that was threatening the baby’s life.
Following the delicate surgery, which lasted only a few minutes outside the womb, the baby was carefully returned to continue developing in utero.
At 36 weeks, the child was delivered healthy through a natural birth, without complications. For the family, who endured months of anxiety and hope, the moment of finally holding their daughter was overwhelming with joy.
The procedure was performed in the United States at Texas Children’s Hospital in collaboration with Baylor College of Medicine.
