The Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has stated that his intention to contest the victory awarded by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to Alhaji Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the February 25, 2023, Presidential Election is not motivated by personal interests.

He claimed that it was in the best interests of Nigeria and her people.

He went on to say that it was done to expand democracy and ensure that legitimacy was not bestowed on “an outcome of illegitimacy”.

The former Vice President made the claim in a personal statement in response to a “fake press release attributed to me and purportedly giving legitimacy to the widely rigged Presidential Election of February 25”.

He claimed he did not make the statement and that it should be ignored.

The full text of Atiku’s reaction:

“I have been made aware of a forged press release attributed to me and purportedly endorsing the widely rigged presidential election on February 25.

“The so-called press release did not come from me or my office, and it should be treated as false and purposefully contrived by those who illegally appropriated the mandate of the Nigerian people.

“To avoid any doubt, I wish to state unequivocally that my lawyers continue to have my unwavering mandate to challenge the outcome of the February 25 presidential election.

“I join other Nigerians and friends of our great country in emphatically rejecting the predetermined outcome of the February 25 election.

“Along with my party, the Peoples Democratic Party, I will continue to challenge the legality of that election.

“My decision to challenge the sham election of February 25, the worst election in our democratic history, is based on the interests of Nigeria and its people, not on my personal interests. Its goal is to deepen democracy while ensuring that we do not provide credibility to an illegitimate outcome.

“My commitment to Nigeria’s democratic struggle extends beyond the election season.”
